We Automated our Tech Lawn - Mammotion Luba 3 AWD

Key Points

• 1.A Tailwind IQ3 smart garage controller was used to automate a 40-year-old dumb garage door opener. It includes a door sensor, connects to Home Assistant, and was installed in roughly 7 minutes using dry-contact wiring and double-sided tape.
• 2.The Mammotion Luba 3 AWD (5000H model) requires minimal assembly and no external RTK antenna. Every unit now includes a bundled 4G SIM card with free iNavi Net RTK positioning service across Europe and North America.
• 3.The Luba 3 was manually walked around the 95 sq meter lawn to create its map, using LiDAR and computer vision for a 3D model. No-go zones were set to protect obstacles, mowing height was set to 8 cm, and the full lawn was completed in under 40 minutes.
• 4.Home Assistant automation fully sequences the mow cycle without human intervention. The garage opens as mowing starts, closes once the mower reaches the lawn, reopens when progress hits 95% or the mower begins returning, then closes again once it's docked.
• 5.On day three, physical obstacles were added to test Mammotion's AI obstacle avoidance, which can detect over 300 common lawn objects. The system also features a night mode designed to detect animals like hedgehogs, and four independently driven motors can handle slopes up to 38° (80% grade).
